On a day trip from Vicenza, my brother, Tiziana, our friend Marco, Ania, and I decided to take a car and drive all the way to the northern part of the province of Verona and climb up the Monte Baldo. In about 1h 30 minutes we reached the small hamlet of Novezza, set at about 1480m above sea level, and after parking the car set ourselves on the trail up the mountain. We followed the trail heading steeply uphill which soon after made our breath much shorter and our legs hurt. We had to take several breaks and because of that took then the chance to admire the panorama around us with the Alps to the north and the Lessinia plateau to the east behind us. As we reached then the top at about 2000m, we then decided to take the trail heading northwards to the right. It followed the rocky side with the peaks to our left and the open panorama to the right. It was once used during the First World War by the Italian troops in order to get to the vantage points and counterattack any advance of the Austro-Hungarian troops down below in the valley as the border was once just nearby. We continued along the path which at one point gave us the option to turn left and head up the rocks in order to reach the peak, Cima Valdritta. We followed it and after a steep climb reached the peak, the highest of the whole Monte Baldo, at 2218m above sea level. From there we had a beautiful view as there weren't many clouds and we could clearly see the whole of Lake Garda right below, with the town of Riva del Garda to the north, all of the towns of Lombard side in front, and the southern part of the lake to the left. We decided to spend some time there eating the lunch we had brought with us while admiring the view. After the break, we then decided to head back down to the main trail and walk back heading southwards. After a bit, we then reached another deviation which shortly after brought us up to another peak, the Cima Telegrafo, at 2200m. Here there was a mountain hut where we refilled our water bottles, and the pylons of an old chairlift now not in use anymore. After another short break, we decided it was time to go, so from there we followed a trail that headed straight down the mountain toward our car. We zigzagged through rocky terrain and low pine bushes constantly having a beautiful view of the landscape in front of us. Eventually, after the descent, we reached our car after a nice 15km hike, with about 1175m of ascent and 1125m of descent. We then drove off towards Vicenza and on the way there decided to stop in the town of Soave with its medieval castle and towns. We walked around the old town for a little while before ending up in the Pizzeria Scaligera for dinner where we, unfortunately, ate a really bad pizza. Then we were back in the car and driving home to Vicenza.
