Atltlandsberg (06/02/2022)
After spending the Christmas holidays in Italy I came back to Germany and Berlin after starting a new job I decided to take a bit of rest on the weekends as the weather was also rather cold and damp. On the first weekend of February, Ania and I then decided to do a day trip from Berlin and visit a nearby old town just outside the border of the city, Altlandsberg. We took a local S-Bahn and reached the station of Hoppegarten from where we then switched on a bus that took us to the old town of Atllandsberg. Once there we got off the bus and continued on foot. From the Am Markt, the main square we walked through the pretty city center eventually reaching the church of St Mary, the main one in town. It was originally built from fieldstones as a three-nave basilica in the late Romanesque style in the 13th century, and rebuilt in the late Gothic style around 1500, with some alterations in the 19th century. Unfortunately, it was close so we moved on reaching the northern end of the old town where the castle once used to stand. The castle which was turned into a baroque residence burned down in 1757 and only the castle church was then rebuilt between 1765 and 1768. The church like the previous one was closed so we walked around what was once the castle grounds, with a nice little garden still under construction. From the garden, we then decided to walk along the perimeter of the well-preserved medieval walls which enclose the old town for about 1.3km. We made a tour around the old town and along the way passed by the 14th-century city gate, Berliner Torturm, and the Strausberger Torturm the other medieval tower. After the walk around the perimeter walls, we took one last walk through the old town and then decided to walk the about 7km distance it took us from Altlandsberg to reach the S-Bahn station of Neuenhagen and from there take the train back to Berlin.
