Burg bei Magdeburg (21/06/2022)

After work, as the June days are long, I decided to take a trip and visit the town of Burg bei Magdeburg, as the name suggests, not far from the city of Magdeburg, a few kilometers to the northeast. After taking the train from Alexanderplatz, I arrived a couple of hours later directly at Burg's train station. Once there I headed on to visit the city center, which I reached shortly after passing through the more modern part of town. Later on, I reached the main square, the Rolandplatz, which once must have been surrounded by old buildings but nowadays is a mix of mostly modern ones. At its eastern side stood a Roland statue, a 1999 modern reproduction of the historical statue that once stood in the city in 1521 but was destroyed in 1823. Not far from there I then reached the church of St.Nicolai, a large Romanesque building with a tall facade featuring twin spires that was already closed as it was late afternoon. At that point, I then continued on through the town and reached the northeastern part of the old town, the core and oldest part of Burg. Here I passed some timber-framed houses and reached the historic town hall, originally from the 13th century but currently in its baroque form. Right behind it was another major church in town, the Unser Lieben Frauen, a Romanesque building with two towers, one of which shorter than the other. As this one was closed too I walked onwards, reaching then the 14th-century Berlinerturm, one of the medieval towers part of the fortifications that used to enclose the old town. In this part, a whole section of the walls still survives, and I decided to walk by admiring then two more towers on the way, the Kuhturm and the Hexenturm, the oldest of them all, from the 11th century. From there I then continued my visit walking through more pretty streets in the old town, and by the 13th-century church of St Petri, also closed. To end the day, I walked through and stopped for a little while at a nice small park in the northern part of town, the Weinberg. This well-cared area featured a little hill on which three rows of vineyards were set, and a little cafe with seats and benches was located, and the locals were enjoying drinks and dinner at sunset. Finally, it was time for me to head to the train station and back to Berlin.
