Herzberg & Uebigau (10/12/2021)

After waking up to another snowy morning I decided to do a day trip south of Berlin. After taking a regional train I then reached the station of Herzberg from which I had to walk quite a bit to reach the city center. The snow here had mostly melted and was just sparse on some of the rooftops of the houses. As I walked around the old town I gazed at some nice burgher houses some of which with the nice timber framing. I then reached the main square, the Markt, where the town hall is located, and behind it the large church of St Mary. Built during the 14th century in a Late Gothic style it measures 42.5 meters in length, 22 in width, 36.6 in height, and with the baroque bell tower reaching 64.3m at its tip. The interior featured a beautiful painted ceiling with 15th-century frescoes. After the visit to the church, I then walked through the rest of town and crossed over the Black Elster river to reach the supermarket where I bought myself lunch to eat later on. Then I headed back towards the city center and after one last stroll around admiring the rest of the architecture I walked on to reach the train station from where I took a ride to the next town, Uebigau. While traveling I took the chance to have my lunch while sitting down, and in the warmth. After reaching the station of Falkenberg, instead of waiting for another train to take me to nearby Uebigau, due to the proximity, I decided to just walk instead. The walk took me just less than an hour and was quite pleasing as the sun had decided to shine. After reaching the old town I walked around admiring the architecture and houses and passing then by the church of St Nikolai. The church whose core dates to the 13th century and with a late 17th-century baroque bell tower was unfortunately closed. So I continued on my walk seeing the nice timber-framed houses and reaching the large central square. Apart from the church, the town consists of mostly low houses typical of medieval market towns such as this one. The Markt, the main square, was in fact used as the main market back then and is surrounded by these low but nice houses. On the southeastern end of town, I then passed by the structure of the Schloss Uebigau, a neo-baroque palace from the end of the 19th century with Art Nouveau additions. The castle had some scaffolding on the side and some workers were intent on taking care of refurbishing it. Behind the castle, I then walked through the nice park, once probably part of the palace's grounds. From there I then walked south to Uebigau's train station where, after waiting for a bit to enjoy the last rays of the sun, I then took a ride back to Berlin.
